Architecting Enterprise AI Assistants for Healthcare & Employee Benefits
Employee health benefits are one of the largest corporate expense lines, yet employees frequently make suboptimal plan selections due to dense policy jargon, deductibles, and complex co-pay matrices. As VP, Head of Engineering for an AI-enabled decision support platform in insurance and employee benefits, I led our engineering team in building and launching the AI Employee & Employer Assistant to transform how benefits decisions are made.
The Two-Sided Benefits Challenge
Modern benefits decision-making must address two distinct stakeholder personas with radically different goals:
- Employees: Need clear, empathetic, 24/7 answers to highly personal questions: "Will this plan cover my dependent's specialist visits?", "What is my maximum out-of-pocket exposure?", and "Which plan gives me the highest protection value for my family?"
- Employers & HR Leaders: Need aggregate utilization visibility, automated open-enrollment orchestration, compliance tracking, and intelligent plan recommendations that optimize corporate spend without degrading coverage quality.
The Personal Protection Score (PPS) Algorithm
To eliminate decision paralysis, we developed the Personal Protection Score algorithm. The model ingests anonymized demographic parameters, risk tolerance indicators, and historical claim profiles to calculate a normalized 0–100 protection rating across available healthcare plans.

Zero-Hallucination Guardrails for Insurance Policies
In healthcare benefits, incorrect information regarding coverage exclusions or copays has severe financial implications for families. We implemented strict deterministic policy-grounding guardrails:
- Every assistant recommendation must quote and link to the exact clause in the insurer's Summary of Benefits and Coverage (SBC).
- If a policy clause is ambiguous or requires formal underwriting pre-authorization, the assistant transparently flags the boundary and routes to human HR escalation.
- End-to-end PII and PHI data redaction before any contextual payload reaches inference models.
Scaling the IT & Engineering Organization
Launching this platform required aligning product velocity with enterprise compliance, distributed infrastructure scalability, and rigorous telemetry. By structuring autonomous feature pods with clear domain boundaries, we delivered the AI assistant ahead of peak open-enrollment season with zero downtime.
